Finding a use for a fan brush...

Why is that fanned out paintbrush included in nail art paintbrush sets? I don't know what it's official use is. If you do, please leave a comment explaining it to me. I tried it out and made this. Maybe that's it's intended use. I started with a white polish and used turquoise acrylic paint and the fanned out paintbrush to go in at different angles.

This is left to a matte finish:

Then I added a coat of Sinful Colors Pearl Harbor which has a pretty awesome blue/green glitter. It's hard to photograph.

This is just a quick swatch of Pearl Harbor over white and black respectively.

Enjoy!

  1. Hi! I've always thought it's for applying loose glitter. Like in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxHFfyHXkmU But I can't really tell...

  2. So great! I love your use for it.
I have not found a use for it yet, but I have seen it used to apply loose glitter... look towards the end of this video http://www.nail-art.fr/article-video-water-marble-voie-lactee-90585840.html

  3. It's supposed to be a brush for applying glitter, like Eugenia said. You dip the brush in loose glitter, place it above the nail and pat the brush or sweep it on the nail polish very gently.

  7. I once used the fan brush to mix blobs of wet polish together, almost like a water or needle marble? it does a decent job, but the colours mix together more than both marbles :)

  8. I like that glitter! I think I saw a tutorial somewhere where they used a fan brush to drop loose glitter on top of wet polish. I don't know... my fan brush has been sitting around un-used for months, lol!

  10. Here's a YouTube video I found about using all sorts of brushes, and specifically, the fanned brush. I've skipped the video ahead to the time she uses the fanned brush.

  11. Pretty sure it's for loose glitter! I don't even use it though, even for loose glitter - I just dab my finger and pat it on my nail haha! Cool use for it though! Think it'd be great for creating textures :)

  12. Perfect timing with that question: I received my first brush set just yesterday, and sat and stared at the fan brush, wondering what the heck I was supposed to use that for. :D

  18. Oh you all must be so young! LOL Fan brushing was really popular in the 80's and early 90's. I will still occasionally get a request for it but try to talk them out of it.;)
I used the fan brush on these nails for the light purple fading on the side. I'm not saying I like it, just saying that's what it's used for LOL
